Anzio Beachhead Casualties / There is some variance regarding the actual number of those killed, injured, missing or captured in the four months spanning January 22nd and May 25th 1944, as statistical records were either lost, destroyed or never existed. It is known that six women were killed in one of the hospital areas. Between 12,000 and 18,000 men killed in action, 60,000 injured (combat & non-combat) or missing in action and 11,000 taken prisoner are numbers which are generally accepted today. Dysentery and trenchfoot were common, many thousands of men had to cope with deteriorating health in the midst of battle. / |
