supply ship at the port of anzio 1944
Operation Fischfang / On February 16th 1944, German forces launched a major offensive on the line of Via Anziate near 'The Factory'. 'Fischfang', or 'Fish Trap' was an intense five day battle. The 14th Army, 76th Panzer Corps and 1st Fallschirmjäger Corps, supported by 452 artillery units, heavily outnumbered the U.S. 45th. Division's 157th and 179th Infantry Regiments around Carroceto, but were unable to make any progress in the face of sustained Allied artillery attacks, which fired fifteen rounds for each one of their own. The human cost was high, 10-12,000 killed, injured, missing or captured a most conservative estimate. /
