'ON THIS SITE THOUSANDS OF MEN FOUGHT AND DIED' |

We spend a great deal of time in the Anzio beachhead area, making local contacts and studying the locations which form the backbone of our tour. Snippets of information on this website about Anzio in 1944 have been inspired by reading a selection of outstanding publications, particularly those by Lloyd Clark and Carlo D'Este, and poring over online memoirs and opinion from war veterans and military historians respectively. Some of their accounts are listed here. We recollect the Anzio beachhead campaign on our tour by way of discussion and debate in the field. The locations we visit have been specifically chosen to illustrate significant combat events. |

M10 Tank Destroyers / M10 TD's were pitched against German Tigers and Elefants in the Anzio beachhead, firing alongside Sherman M4A1's to repel their incursions while protecting infantry positions. Unpopular with troops for it's light armour and dangerously open turret, which had to be rotated manually for up to two minutes to make a full turn, the M10 Tank Destroyer was however quick for it's size and heavily armed. M10 TD's were responsible for the destruction of many German tanks and their occupants, as well as anti-tank gun emplacements in the flat fields of the beachhead, most notably on February 18th at Carroceto. / |
