All enquiries: info@anziotours.com     Marshland and Malaria / Beachhead terrain was the result of Mussolini's land reclamation and public health initiatives between 1922-1939, to create new farmland from former marshland and eradicate malaria. He achieved it using labour camps where workers toiled in poor conditions. The network of canals, trenches and farmhouses built for fascist farmers from north Italy was flooded with brackish water by the Germans. They shut down pumping stations and sabotaged dikes to create a mosquito infested bog, then shelled the entire area for four months.
