Surgery in the Anzio beachhead / George W. Tipton was a U.S. surgeon who tended to the injured and dying for the 15th Evacuation (Surgical) Hospital. He spent over four months saving many lives through a deadly hail of bombs, shell fragments and shrapnel, which tore down on all sides of and occasionally into the hospital area from relentless German air attacks and artillery. The Anzio beachhead combat zone spanned a relatively small area, so emergency care was never too far away. 2,000 hospital beds were soon filled with casualties coming in straight from the battlefield, bypassing front line medical units. / Read his story |
