For transportation around the beachhead area, we use a Mercedes Viano for up to seven (7) guests and Mercedes Minibus for up to sixteen (16). Both vehicles are new, comfortable and air conditioned with leather interiors. |

'At your hotel or other Rome accommodation, you will be met by your chauffeur (native Italian, speaks good English) and tour co-ordinator. You will be driven out of the city towards Campo di Carne. The route we take traverses the beachhead area on what used to be Via Anziate, before you rendezvous with your guide at the war memorial in Anzio. After breakfast on Yellow Beach, your day begins in woodland near Peter Beach with metal detecting around foxholes.' |

Journey time from Rome to Anzio is approximately 35 minutes. Transit time between each battlefield location in the beachhead area is 10-15 minutes. Your driver will park up and wait for you to return on foot when necessary. The Mercedes Viano is pictured here (left). |

The German Response / The challenge of keeping Allied forces pinned down and out of reach of Rome within a few days of the landings should have been a logistical nightmare for German High Command, but they constructed a formidable defensive ring around the beachhead at very short notice. Between January 22nd and February 1st, no less than 95,000 troops, 500 tanks, artillery and support from the rest of Italy, Yugoslavia, France and even Germany itself rushed towards Anzio to stem the Allied tide. Another 30,000 men and munitions were to follow. / Click here for details |
